From 1453 until 1798, the Ottoman Empire was the hegemonic superpower of the Middle East. Then on July 1, 1798 Napoleon Bonaparte landed the army of the French Republic in Alexandria, Egypt forever breaking the Ottoman Empire's regional power monopoly. In this discussion Dr. Roy will consider the major events that followed and how they shaped the current configuration of the Middle East. This is Part 2 of An Overview of Middle Eastern History.
